What I Love About Reiki:

I love talk therapy. I mean, I really, really love talk therapy. Whether I am sitting on the couch or in the therapist chair, talk therapy is powerful and played a major role in helping me build an amazing life. However, after years of hashing out childhood ickiness, difficult relationships, and resolving core issues, I still found myself overreacting in situations that did not warrant that type of response. It wasn’t until a crisis intervention class in graduate school that I began to understand why my head and body were not on the same page.

We know from the research that a trauma can get trapped in the body. When our innate ability to avoid pain using fight or flight gets frozen, our biological systems go haywire. According to Louis Gross, “Stressful energy and tension actually gets stuck in the tissues of our bodies and is even more significant than the mental memories we usually consider with regard to trauma. These are physical things stuck inside us, so they 'keep alive' the same discomforts, emotional upsets, and negative feelings and thoughts we had during the actual event. The actual event is over, but we carry the energetic 'imprint' of a lot of the energy that was generated in that event. This means that our 'baggage' is not so much mentally psychological, but rather, something foreign we picked up that continues to pollute and restrict us until we use special techniques to dissolve it out of our bodies.”

Have you ever found yourself completely overreacting to a situation that did not even come close to warranting that type of over the top response? Very often, that’s old trauma. In your head, you understand you're acting crazy! But your body is simply remembering a prior experience and those biological systems are causing you to react excessively.  For example, an adult child of an alcoholic might find themselves in a state of extreme agitation when an event gets cancelled. The grown-up self knows it’s not really a big deal.  Yet it’s possible this cancellation triggered a biological reaction from the feeling of childhood. The body remembers the consistent feelings of disappointment, abandonment, and the fear of if we don’t do it now, it will never ever happen. Hence, reiki.

Reiki has been shown in research to help calm those biological systems and restore balance in the body. As a licensed professional counselor and certified master level reiki practitioner, I find reiki to be the perfect supplement to talk therapy. No client has ever regretted their decision to try it and several have made the reiki experience a regular part of their healing journey. In some clients, it even “fast tracks” their therapy experience.

Below is a detailed description of the reiki experience. Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions or concerns.

Reiki is:

Reiki is not:

- Affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice

- New. Reiki energy itself is thousands of years old

Definition of Reiki:

Reiki (pronounced RAY-key) is the Japanese art of stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energywork using spiritually guided life force energy.

A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional. Many people use Reiki for general wellness. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it may assist the body in creating an environment to facilitate healing. Reiki is a great tool to use as a complement to traditional medicine and is practiced in many hospitals and medical care settings.

A Typical Session:

A typical session lasts about an hour. A discussion will usually take place during an initial session with a Reiki Practitioner. They will describe the session to the client, give the client an opportunity to discuss any particular problems or issues they are experiencing and ask them what they are hoping to achieve from their session. For the actual session, the client will rest comfortably on a massage table on their back with their shoes removed. Reiki can be performed with the client sitting comfortably in a chair as well. Unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing are removed and a client is always fully clothed; loose, comfortable clothing is suggested. A session can either be hands-on, where a Practitioner will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where they will hold their hands slightly above your body. If a client prefers not to be touched they can indicate this to the practitioner before they begin.

The session will then proceed with the Reiki Practitioner moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at the person’s head or feet. A recipient of Reiki might feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating.
